April 2007:
April found me in Kabul with Task Force Phoenix. TF Phoenix is tasked to train the Afghan Army and the Afghan Border Police, and so has small contingents of Marines, Soldiers, and international troops (I met Germans, Dutch, Mongolians, and French) in many small outposts throughout the country.
We flew east from Camp Phoenix over the Hindu Kush to Jalalabad, where I embedded with a Marine contingent who was training the ANA…then off to the historical Khyber Pass with the Marines as we hiked up the rugged peaks with the Border Police – and stopped a camel caravan smuggling goods in from Pakistan. Is this 2007 or 1607 ? Time truly does not move here.
Then up due north to Camp Joyce, with another small Marine Contingent. We were outside of Asadabad, on the Afghan-Pakistani border, where we were attacked by the Taliban within 30 minutes of our arrival. The Marines fought off the attack, aided by the young and aggressive members of the Afghan Army – it’s their country, and by God, with the Marines training them - these young men can fight!
